The Varanda de Lisboa restaurant at the 4* Hotel Mundial in the centre of Lisbon was the venue for the Royal British Club Lunch on 13th November.
The Chairman, Philip Portal, welcomed 37 members and guests to the event at which John Duggan introduced Mr Markku Mylly, the recently appointed Executive Director of the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) who provided an insight into the work of the Agency and how it became established in Lisbon. Following the disasters of the MV Erika in 1999 off the coast of France and the Prestige off the coast of Galicia in 2002 it was clear that stronger European maritime legislation and an enforcement agency were required. He explained that the Agency had the following prime functions:
Clearly with a budget of €54,000,000 and some 240 staff this crucial operation plays a vital role in keeping the seas around the EU safe and clean.
The RBC Members enjoyed a convivial lunch and were suitably impressed by the work being conducted in Lisbon by EMSA.
