The Association of the Friends of the British Cemetery is responsible for the maintenance of one of the oldest British military cemeteries in Europe, in Elvas. Our aim is to provide a permanent place of remembrance of the Allied fallen in the Peninsular War 1808-1814.
Lady Jane Wellesley, daughter of the 8th Duke of Wellington, is the patron of our Association.
We welcome new Friends who wish to help maintain this historic site. The annual subscription is €10.00 or £10 per person.
Our major annual activities are a Remembrance service in the British Cemetery in Elvas on November 11th, attended by Portuguese and Spanish civil and military officials as well as members and visitors.
In May the Battle of Albuera and the sieges of Badajoz are remembered in a ceremony attended also by British, Portuguese and Spanish civil and military officials.
Other annual events are a Christmas bazaar in Elvas and a spring reception in London, in benefit of the British Cemetery.
See http://british-cemetery-elvas.org/events.html for dates and more information.
